And The Guru said....
Why miracle is not the ideal method of attracting people to God.
So my Guru Maharaja, a renowned urban mystic, an African Chief and a Parivrajakacarya Gaudiya Vaisnava Sanyasi, himself a man of authority, power and holiness, responded.
He has power and he knows it. His utterances are from the depths of conviction. The fear of him makes offenders go panicking, and the love of him make people take unspeakable risk for his pleasure.
He was not a rubber-stamped official Guru waiting to be told how to conduct his mission. He has a mission and he knows it. He often said, this is my special commission from Prabhupada or as part of my special commission...
It feels really good knowing you have a General worthy of his salt. He inspires faith and complete surrender, his words are ordinances that engrave themselves in the innermost crest of your heart.
So knowing a bit about the type of person I addressed my question can help my readers to appreciate his response.
Like the Bible says, what kind of man is Jesus, he calms the storm, he makes the blind to see, he heals the sick and yet he says beware of those who say, Lord, lord, in thy name we have done such and such, be certain I'm not in them!
After explaining to him the healing of the man with hernia, I asked if we could use this means, divine healing, as part of our preaching tool.
We were on a morning Japa walk, and as we were making the gentle strides in deep meditation he suddenly stopped to address my question.
He said, No! If we begin to do that, then people will not come to us in search of God, but rather in search for power. They'll pretend they're following or listening to you, but in their hearts, they'll simply be thinking, when will he give us the power🤦🏻♂️
He said further, and as for you there's something you need to learn from this. Because of your austerities, dedication and devotion, there's a rain of mercy that's falling on you right now.
And just as when it's raining you put a bucket in the rain, you have to be patient to let it be filled till the water runs over.
If you continue to use the water while it rains, when the rain will be over you'll not have a bucket full of water. So wait till your bucket of rain of mercy runs over. At that time you'll do greater things effortlessly. People around you will benefit from the grace you have received without any great effort on your part. So he said!
And so it has been!
Why must you walk in the dark when you have the torch in your hand. Authority does not speak of itself, people testify to its power. We have the Holy Names, we have the power!
Hare Krishna 🙏🏼
