Tinubu Replaces Abia-Born Banker Who Declined CBN Board Appointment

President Bola Tinubu has shaken up the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) board, nominating Ruby Onwudiwe to replace Urum Eke, who declined the offer citing prior commitments at the World Bank.

During Wednesday’s plenary, Senate President Godswill Akpabio revealed Tinubu’s request for Onwudiwe’s confirmation, marking a significant change in the CBN’s leadership.

In a letter, Tinubu emphasized compliance with the CBN Act, 2007, as he sought Senate approval for Onwudiwe’s appointment, underscoring the need for expeditious screening.

“The Senate is advised to kindly note that Ruby Onwudiwe is a replacement of Mr Urum Kalu Eke due to the unavailability of Mr Eke to serve in that position.

“While it is my hope, therefore, that the senate will screen and confirm in its usual expeditious manner, the appointment of Ruby Onwudiwe PhD, please, accept distinguished senate president and distinguish senators of my highest regards” President Tinubu’s letter partly reads.
