Calls For Action: Doherty Writes To Akpabio, Abbas, Seeking Suspension Of Coastal Road Project
Opposition figure Funsho Doherty from Lagos State has echoed the growing demand for an investigation into the allocation of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road project to Hi-Tech Construction Ltd.
In a formal letter directed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, dated April 11th, Doherty underscored the necessity of scrutinizing the contract award process.
Doherty’s letter emphasized concerns regarding the contract’s allocation to Hi-Tech Construction Ltd, notably owned by Gilbert Chagoury, an associate of President Bola Tinubu.
According to Doherty, this decision contravened the Public Procurement Act of 2007 by sidestepping competitive bidding protocols.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had previously voiced similar reservations about the project’s allocation procedure.
Having contested in the 2023 Lagos State Governorship Election, Doherty urged the National Assembly to launch an inquiry into the matter, citing its role as representatives of the populace and its oversight obligations.
Doherty advocated for the immediate suspension of the project until a thorough review of the contract’s terms could be conducted, emphasizing the imperative of adhering to due process, including competitive bidding, as mandated by law.
He further emphasized the importance of prosecuting any violations uncovered during the investigation, emphasizing the need for accountability and deterrence in accordance with the law
